A global organization needed to understand how raw-material supply risks could affect finished goods across a complex network of manufacturing plants and distribution centers. Materials differed in their exposure to supply constraints, including the number of suppliers available, but the company lacked a clear view of how these upstream risks translated into downstream product exposure and where mitigation efforts should be focused.

Rulex Platform enabled the company to trace these relationships across the supply network, propagating high, medium, and low risk levels (HML) assigned to raw materials through product and network dependencies to identify finished-goods exposure at distribution centers. This gave the company a clearer basis for identifying vulnerable products and targeting mitigation strategies.

From material risk to product exposure

At manufacturing plants, raw materials were assessed according to their supply vulnerability and assigned a high, medium, or low (HML) risk level. The evaluation considered supplier availability, including the number of suppliers associated with each material, providing an initial picture of where potential sourcing constraints could originate.

Understanding the risk attached to individual materials, however, was only the first part of the analysis. The company also needed to determine how that risk could affect products further along the supply chain. Bills of materials (BOMs) provided the link between raw materials and the finished goods that relied on them, allowing Rulex Platform to map supply exposure through production.

The view was expanded beyond manufacturing by incorporating quantities moved and transportation-lane data (T-lanes). These connections made it possible to follow material dependencies through to distribution centers and assess the potential downstream impact of an upstream availability issue.

Based on this network of relationships, finished goods could be assigned their own high, medium, or low risk level. Instead of viewing supply vulnerability only at raw-material level, the company could see which products at distribution were most exposed because of the materials required to produce them.

This product-level perspective provided a more actionable basis for mitigation. Teams could focus on the dependencies associated with greater supply exposure and evaluate responses such as diversifying suppliers or substituting materials.

Add business value to the risk picture

Identifying finished goods exposed to supply disruption is only part of the picture. The level of exposure becomes more meaningful when considered alongside the business importance of the products affected.

A complementary ABC analysis starts with finished goods at distribution centers and works upstream to determine which raw materials support the highest-value products. Viewed alongside supply risk propagation, it helps distinguish dependencies that combine high material risk with high product value.

Meet Rulex Platform

01. Data Agility

Rulex Platform brings heterogeneous data together within a unified environment, combining information from files, databases, cloud storage, and enterprise repositories. Data can be collected, transformed, reconciled, and organized into reusable flows, allowing different supply chain datasets to be prepared and combined within the same environment.

This is particularly relevant when an analysis depends on information distributed across different parts of the supply chain. Product structures, material data, supplier information, quantities, transportation lanes, and distribution data can be brought into the same analytical flow, providing the connected data foundation required to examine dependencies across multiple levels of the network.

02. Visual, no-code workflow design

Rulex Platform enables users to build and manage analytical processes through a visual, drag-and-drop environment rather than custom application development. Configurable tasks can be connected into logical workflows, allowing data preparation, transformation, and analysis to be managed within the same platform.

Its WYSIWYG approach lets users work directly with the data while configuring each step, making the effect of transformations visible throughout the workflow. This helps keep complex, multi-stage analyses transparent and easier to adapt as data sources, business rules, or analytical requirements change.

Why Rulex for supply risk propagation

Supply risk becomes actionable when its downstream impact is clear. Rulex Platform connects material vulnerabilities with product dependencies across the supply network, helping teams identify which finished goods are exposed and focus mitigation on the risks that matter most.

Frequently asked questions

What is supply risk propagation?

Supply risk propagation traces the potential impact of an upstream supply issue through the network to understand which downstream products may be affected. In this case, risk levels assigned to raw materials at manufacturing plants were carried through production and distribution relationships to assess the exposure of finished goods.

How does Rulex Platform connect raw-material risk with finished goods?

Rulex Platform can bring heterogeneous supply chain information into a common analytical flow. In this project, BOM relationships were combined with quantities and transportation-lane data to follow dependencies from raw materials through manufacturing to finished goods at distribution centers. More generally, Rulex Platform supports the integration, aggregation, reconciliation, and harmonization of data from heterogeneous sources.

Why are BOMs important for supply risk analysis?

Bills of materials reveal how finished goods depend on components and raw materials across the product structure. Following these relationships makes it possible to understand how risk associated with an upstream input can affect products further downstream. Rulex Platform also supports working with complex, multi-level BOM structures, making hierarchical product relationships available for analysis.
