Customer defaults rarely occur without warning. Changes in transaction behavior, credit bureau information, and external ratings often provide early indicators of increasing credit risk. The challenge is bringing these signals together quickly enough to support timely intervention.

The growth of open banking has significantly increased both the volume and variety of available data, making early warning systems more accurate but also more complex to build and operate. Financial institutions need to combine multiple data sources, domain expertise, and predictive analytics within a process that remains scalable and reliable.

Rulex developed an Early Warning System that enables financial institutions to monitor credit portfolios daily by combining machine learning, business rules, and automated data preparation within a single decision flow.

From raw data to early risk detection

The project began by collecting and preparing data from private, small business, and corporate portfolios. Rulex Platform automatically imported, cleaned, transformed, and merged information from multiple sources, creating a consistent foundation for credit risk analysis.

Once the data had been harmonized, the platform calculated a set of transaction-driven metrics that became the input for the machine learning model, enabling the system to identify customers showing early warning signs of potential default.

To ensure that predictions reflected both historical patterns and business expertise, the machine learning output was combined with the bank’s domain knowledge through Rulex’s Rule Engine. Business rules could validate, adjust, or override model predictions whenever specific regulatory policies, internal procedures, or exceptional business conditions required a different decision.

The complete workflow was executed within a single automated process capable of analyzing approximately one million credit positions every day within the bank’s operational time window, enabling continuous portfolio monitoring at scale.

A scalable approach to credit risk monitoring

The solution enabled the bank to transform early warning activities into an automated daily process:

  • Data from several customer portfolios now flows into one analytical workflow instead of being handled separately.
  • Transaction-based indicators make it easier to catch customers showing early signs of default.
  • Business rules sit alongside the machine learning predictions, keeping risk assessment more consistent.
  • Roughly one million credit positions get processed every day, within the required operational window.
  • The bank has been able to expand the number of accounts it keeps under continuous monitoring for default risk.

Rulex Platform

01. Data orchestration

Rulex Platform autonomoulsy imports, cleans, transforms, and merges data from multiple internal and external sources, building a single analytical foundation strong enough to support credit risk assessment at scale.

02. Business Rules Engine

Rulex’s Business Rules Engine automates the execution of business rules at scale. Once deployed, business rules are automatically applied to live data through Rulex’s visual drag-and-drop environment, where every record is automatically evaluated against the complete set of defined conditions. This ensures consistent, traceable, and high-performance rule execution while ensuring alignment with business expertise and organizational policies.

03. Business-managed rules

Business users and domain experts can define, test, and maintain business rules independently using intuitive if-then syntax in familiar environments such as Microsoft Excel, without relying on software development. As internal policies or regulatory requirements evolve, rules can be updated quickly and redeployed without disrupting existing workflows, allowing organizations to adapt decision logic faster while maintaining governance and consistency.

04. Transaction-driven metrics

Rulex Platform automatically calculates transaction-driven metrics that feed the prediction process. These indicators enrich the analytical workflow, helping the machine learning model identify customers showing early signs of potential default.

Why Rulex as a Early Warning System

Early Warning Systems evolve over time. As regulations change, business policies are updated, and new data becomes available, decision logic must evolve without disrupting daily operations. Rulex Platform enables financial institutions to continuously adapt predictive models and business rules within a single environment, ensuring scalable, explainable, and governed credit risk monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Early Warning System (EWS)?

An Early Warning System (EWS) helps financial institutions identify customers showing early signs of potential default before credit deterioration becomes critical. By continuously analyzing customer data, transaction behavior, and external risk indicators, an EWS enables organizations to monitor credit portfolios proactively and support earlier risk management decisions.

What is the Business Rules Engine task?

Rulex’s Business Rules Engine enables organizations to define, execute, and manage business rules using transparent if-then logic without coding. Business users can independently update rules as policies or regulations evolve, ensuring that automated decisions remain aligned with business requirements while reducing dependence on software development.

How does Rulex improve Early Warning Systems?

Rulex combines automated data preparation, machine learning, and business rules within a single decision workflow. This enables financial institutions to analyze large credit portfolios, identify customers showing early warning signals, and incorporate domain expertise throughout the decision-making process.
