required to configure objectives and constraints

Rulex supported a Fortune 50 manufacturer in coordinating production and packing within a single detailed scheduling process.

The company was managing orders of different sizes across multiple machines, each with its own capacity limits, while production and packing equipment could not always operate together.

By modeling these interdependencies within the same optimization problem, Rulex helped generate feasible schedules while improving production efficiency and respecting operational requirements.

When every scheduling decision affects the next

Detailed scheduling becomes significantly more complex when multiple constraints need to be satisfied at the same time.

Rulex’s general optimization task, the Build/Solve, allowed the company to account for all requirements and generate an optimized, feasible schedule in a user-friendly way.

CONSTRAINT DEFINITION

Production and packing requirements were defined in a simple spreadsheet using intuitive English syntax. Some of them included:

  • Capacity: different batch sizes and maximum machine capacities had to be respected.
  • Compatibility: production and packaging equipment could only be combined when operationally compatible.
  • Plan stability: the optimized schedule needed to minimize unnecessary changes to the company’s initial plan.

Requirements could be classified according to their importance: ‘hard’ constraints represented conditions that could not be violated, such as ensuring that every batch was assigned within the scheduling plan, while ‘soft’ constraints captured operational preferences, such as assigning certain products to the machines best suited to manufacture them.

PROBLEM CONFIGURATION

The external spreadsheet, containing all constraints, was then imported into Rulex Platform and connected to the Build/Solve.

Through a visual interface, planners could further configure the optimization by selecting the mode and solver, setting execution and iteration limits, and so on, according to the scheduling requirements.

DETAILED SCHEDULE GENERATION

Rulex’s Build/Solve then constructed and solved the optimization problem assigning batches to compatible production and packing resources while respecting hard constraints and optimizing operational preferences. The resulting synchronized schedule provided planners with a feasible production and packing plan in under 10 minutes.

From complex constraints to an optimized plan in minutes

The resulting process automated detailed scheduling while balancing feasibility, operational preferences, and plan stability, leading to:

  • Less than 10 minutes to generate a synchronized schedule
  • Unnecessary changes to the initial schedule minimized
  • No mathematical formulas or scripts
  • A production-ready solution delivered in under one month

Frequently asked questions

Can Rulex optimize production and packing schedules together?

Yes. Rulex can optimize interconnected production and packing decisions simultaneously, helping teams avoid conflicts between processes and generate synchronized schedules that respect real operational constraints.

Does Rulex require custom code to configure scheduling constraints?

No. With the Build/Solve optimization task, objectives, variables, and constraints can be defined in configurable spreadsheets using plain-English syntax, without complex mathematical formulas or custom scripts. This makes scheduling models easier to adapt as requirements change.

What other capabilities can Rulex add to detailed scheduling?

Beyond optimization, Rulex Platform combines capabilities such as what-if scenario simulation, composite AI, custom decision dashboards, and automation tools. This allows teams to explore alternative plans and connect scheduling decisions with downstream execution.
